Social Media Addiction Lawsuits: Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat and YouTube Claims

Status: Investigating claims · Last updated November 2026

If your child became addicted to social media and developed depression, anxiety, an eating disorder or self-harm, or died by suicide, your family may have a claim against the companies behind the platforms. In 2026, juries began holding social media companies responsible. The first verdicts and settlements have changed what families can expect.

At Wieand Parker Arreola, we are investigating social media addiction claims involving Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Snapchat and YouTube. This page explains what the lawsuits allege, where they stand and who may qualify. Call (215) 666-7777 for a free, confidential case review.

How Social Media Platforms Hook Young Users

The lawsuits focus on design, not on what other users post. That distinction matters, because federal law generally protects platforms from liability for user content but not for their own product design. Features under scrutiny include:

    • Infinite scroll and autoplay that remove natural stopping points
    • Recommendation algorithms that push extreme or harmful content
    • Late-night notifications and streaks that reward constant use
    • “Like” counts and beauty filters that fuel social comparison
    • Weak age verification and parental controls

The claims allege these features were designed to maximize time on the app, with knowledge that young users were especially vulnerable.

    Social Media Addiction Lawsuit Update

Personal injury cases are coordinated in two main places: a California state proceeding in Los Angeles and a federal multidistrict litigation in Oakland. As of mid-2026, the federal MDL alone held about 2,600 cases.

On March 25, 2026, a Los Angeles jury returned the first verdict. It found Meta and YouTube negligent in the design of their platforms and awarded a young woman $3 million in compensatory and $3 million in punitive damages. Snap and TikTok settled before trial. Meta and YouTube are appealing. One day earlier, a New Mexico jury ordered Meta to pay $375 million in civil penalties for misleading the public about child safety.

In May 2026, Meta, Snap, TikTok and YouTube settled the first federal bellwether, brought by a Kentucky school district, for a reported $27 million. In August 2026, Meta agreed to a settlement with nearly every state, reported at $17 billion or more, that ended a trial brought by state attorneys general. It requires new limits such as daily time caps for teens and no push notifications during school hours. That settlement goes to the states, not to individual families. Personal injury claims continue.

Who May Qualify for a Social Media Addiction Lawsuit

These are the main factors we review:

    1. Heavy use as a minor. Regular, compulsive use of Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Snapchat or YouTube that began before age 18.
    2. A diagnosed injury. Depression, anxiety, an eating disorder, self-harm, suicidal thoughts or attempts, or death by suicide.
    3. Treatment. Counseling, medication, hospitalization or residential care.
    4. Connection to use. Evidence that symptoms began or worsened with platform use.
    5. Prompt action. Filing deadlines apply, so contact a lawyer promptly to protect your rights.

Young adults who were harmed as teenagers may still qualify, as the plaintiff in the first verdict did.

    Preserving the Evidence

Do not delete accounts. Download account data using each platform’s export tool, and keep screen-time reports, school records and treatment records. A journal of when problems began can also help.

    Social Media Addiction Lawsuit FAQs

    Is this a class action?

Individual injury claims are filed separately and coordinated with similar cases, so each family’s damages are evaluated on their own facts.

Do the state settlements pay families?

No. The state settlements fund programs and require platform changes. Families must bring their own claims to be compensated.

My child is now an adult. Is it too late?

Not necessarily. Contact a lawyer promptly so your options can be reviewed.
